Abattoir Manager-United KingdomJOB INFOTo support business strategy through the management of a, LEAN, efficient and effective abattoir operation, striving for best practice in all areas with particular focus on animal welfare, health and hygiene and health & safety.
To be responsible for overseeing all abattoir activities pertaining to the receipt and on site husbandry of all livestock, processing of meat and co-products including yield attainment, quality and cost base according to the standards established by the business and our customers. Furthermore to develop a competent, multi skilled abattoir team.
Responsibilities/ Objectives:
1. To take ownership for the effective planning of abattoir operations optimizing deployment of resources to meet the daily line requirements and the expectations in terms of throughput and any other variables.
2. Formulate in advance a labour plan for the abattoir taking into account holidays/absence/range of skills/grades required etc. to ensure there is sufficient labour resource to efficiently run production and achieve KPI targets.
3. Establish the correct balance of graded operatives vs graded jobs to ensure on an ongoing basis that the company gets best value from its labour force and is able to fulfil the daily targets.
4. To manage an efficient, effective and compliant abattoir operation from arrival of livestock through to slaughter and processing, encompassing all other key operations therein.
5. To oversee the lairage function and ensure compliance and adherence with all animal welfare regulations, striving for best practice.
6. To oversee all documentation related to animal specification and traceability and manage that process diligently.
7. To oversee the humane slaughter of animals in strict compliance with legislation.
8. To oversee and manage the abattoir line and each process carried out therein ensuring absolute compliance with SOPs, SWPs and to agreed specification and quality KPIs established by the company.
9. To build a knowledge of workforce skills and capabilities thereby utilising appropriately throughout the line with continuous focus on LEAN manufacturing techniques.
10. Oversee the recovery of all co-products and the accurate removal and, where applicable the disposal of all category 1, 2 and 3 materials. Furthermore to ensure total compliance with spinal testing requirements working in conjunction with the technical function.
11. To maximize the opportunities from the 5th quarter component as per company initiatives.
12. To record operational performance against site KPIs and monitor/analyse results implementing remedial action plans where appropriate.
13. Ensure that all operatives and supervisors take full responsibility for product quality and take action immediately through re-training or disciplinary action (if required) to ensure standards are maintained. Conduct post production reviews highlighting internal and FSA quality records and formulate a plan for any corrective action appropriately.
14. To deal with third party bodies (i.e. FSA, MLC, vets etc.) in a professional manner and manage these relationships professionally, always presenting the company in the best light.
15. To ensure the output and delivery of products are as per boning hall/customer specifications.
16. To liaise with the Maintenance/Engineering Manager to formulate and deliver a program of planned preventative maintenance for all key pieces of equipment, to ensure downtime is minimized at all times.
17. To maintain and improve the health and safety and hygiene standards in accordance with relevant legislative and company requirements.
18. Investigate fully any near miss, accident or breach of company or statutory H&S policies.
19. Enforce the correct usage of PPE and conduct regular risk assessments on abattoir equipment and processes.
20. To participate in site visits and audits, when required, in a manner appropriate to the good of the company’s business and ensure all operatives are fully debriefed in preparation of the visit and to implement corrective action in a timely manner.
21. To promote initiatives that support the overall motivation, training, development and deployment of employee resources within the abattoir paying particular attention to employee engagement and relations.
22. To take responsibility for the performance and development of those individuals reporting directly to the role holder, ensure performance related feedback and actions. Ensure all team members adhere to company policies, legislative requirements and customer standards.
23. To manage the workforce in compliance with all employment legislation and the company’s own policies and practices.
